Coborn designed and manufactured the Reciprocating Grinding (RG) machines. In 2002 Coborn also introduced a laser cutting machine for PCD.

Coborn has a unique, global position supplying specialised, individually built, high-precision equipment to the polycrystalline diamond industry and the gemstone and natural diamond tooling industries, with over 80% of machines being exported throughout the world.

In addition to the RG machines for the PCD tooling market the other products include Planetary Grinding (PG) machines for natural diamond and single crystal diamonds, scaif spindles, high frequency milling and grinding spindles, dynamic balancing machines, lapping, polishing and edge honing machines.

We have been actively involved in machine tools and high precision spindle production for over sixty years. All aspects of our machines including design, manufacture, hardware and software are produced in-house by our dedicated team of engineers. This unique capability allows Coborn to provide high precision machine tools which can be tailored specifically to your individual requirement.

RG 5

Semi-Automatic Grinding Machine for PCD, PcBN
& Carbide Tools

Coborn’s RG5B-XD is a very rigid machine, purpose designed for grinding the latest, super-hard tool materials. Tool formats possible include:

  • PCD & PcBN tipped turning/milling inserts and shank type tools
  • PCD & PcBN multiple flank and multiple radii tools such as grooving tools
  • Tools with multiple clearance angles
  • PCD tools such as end mills, reamers and multi-tooth saws with optional rotary fixture

Wheel speed, wheel direction, stroke position and stroke amplitude can be set from the touch-screen. These tool blocks can be stored as a tool program for later recall or modification from the in-built industrial PC.

The machine may be fitted with an optical projector or the enclosed VS5-G vision system (as shown).

In-process measurements are possible with the additional VS5-GM vision system measurement module.

RG 9

CNC Grinding Machine for PCD, PcBN and Carbide Tools

Coborn’s RG9 has been purpose designed for grinding the latest, high-tech tool materials. Tool formats which are possible include:

  • PCD & PcBN tipped turning/milling inserts and shank type tools
  • PCD & PcBN multiple radius tools such as grooving tools and blended radii wiper inserts
  • Tools with multiple clearance angles
  • PcBN tipped tools with K-land chamfer
  • Rotary PCD tools such as end mills, reamers, multi-tooth saws
  • PCD single and multiple flute, helical cutters

The ultra-high speed, VS4 vision system links into the Windows based control system and automates:

  • Alignment of the body before grinding so that the diamond tip may be ground to coincide with the carbide base
  • Detection of the PCD/PcBN blank’s braze position thus eliminating crashes and “air-grinding”
  • Final inspection by measuring angles, flanks and radii
  • Compensation for wheel wear so that sizes remain within the tolerances set
  • Compensation for machine / tool deflections
  • System ready to accept robot loading
